Pregnancy is the best time to be eating nutritious foods. This not only benefits mom and baby, but also can greatly influence how your pregnancy will go. What do I mean? The way you eat while you’re pregnant can be the factor that leads to complications like high blood pressure, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and more.

It can be difficult to know what to eat and how much to eat. Many women just rely on a prenatal supplement. The problem is that most prenatals don’t have enough of each nutrient to make a difference. That’s why it’s important to focus on what you are eating, a prenatal is secondary and may help fill in the cracks of an already established diet.

How to do the Brewer diet?

The Brewers diet is a way of eating that prevents many pregnancy complications and in some cases reverses them. The entire focus of the Brewers diet is blood volume expansion. The Brewers diet consists of 2600 calories, 80-120 grams of protein, salt to taste and unrestricted weight gain.

Below is the exact regimen and you will want to follow this every day in order to prevent complications mentioned earlier.

Important to note

Each food you eat may be counted for one group only (in other words, count 1/4 cup cottage cheese as either 1 milk choice or 1 protein combination choice, not both). Please see the Brewer diet website for more details and to see if you fit into the special circumstances category that will require you to adjust or add some things to the diet.

I have created a free Weekly Checklist so that you can easily check off items from each category to ensure you are getting adequate nutrition during your pregnancy.

Why the Brewer diet for pregnancy?

The reason women should be eating the Brewers diet when pregnant is because it will basically ensure that you are getting all of the nutrition required to have a healthy pregnancy and prevent complications. This nutritional regimen will allow for your body to have the blood volume expansion necessary for healthy pregnancy.

During pregnancy a woman’s blood volume should expand 50%. This is important to be able to create a baby and a placenta. If there isn’t blood volume expansion then the body will start shutting down and this will create complications.

The Brewer diet was created by Dr. Tom Brewer. He worked with pregnant women for several decades and found a connection between his patients and nutrition and the health of their pregnancy. Dr. Brewer created and implemented this diet regimen with his high risk patients who were experiencing some serious complications and was able to reverse the complications allowing the mother to have a healthy and safe pregnancy. He knew the importance of discussing nutrition early on with patients so that they could avoid and prevent complications later on in pregnancy.

Final Thoughts

The Brewer diet is a food regimen for pregnant women that can allow them to prevent or possibly reverse serious complications. This way of eating enables women to take empowered responsibility over the health of their pregnancy. A lot of things about pregnancy and birth can feel out of control for the pregnant woman like pregnancy symptoms or not knowing the exact day/moment she will go into labor, but taking charge of your nutrition can give some control back to the mother. You cannot prevent every complication in pregnancy but this diet can help prevent so much.
